On this day in history Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He died at the age of 73, but his theory of evolution has persisted. In his landmark 1859 publication, On the Origin of Species, Darwin presented meticulous evidence that all life descended from common ancestors, with differentiation of species resulting from a process of natural selection.
