Kid Lit Review of “A Is For Awesome” by Dallas Clayton

This very cute alphabet book for young children provides a delightful departure from the usual boring litany of objects like apples and monkeys and sheep and cows (although they also appear) to teach the alphabet. Each letter is designated by contemporary and alliterative fun words or phrases, like “confident, cool and collected” for the C’s, or “foolish, fantastical, fun” for the F’s. Pictures of objects starting with each letter are whimsical and interesting, such as the objects for V that include volleyball, vampire, vulture, and volcano.

But the book is more than just an alphabet list. There are positive messages embedded therein, such as “L is for Living Life up to its fullest,” “M is for Making the Most of your day,” and “P is for Passion Pursuing what’s right.”

The fanciful and quirky illustrations (the author is also the illustrator) are as cute as can be: the animals are especially adorable. The unconventional choice of pictures will give parents lots of opportunities to teach kids about new things, and sometimes present challenges even for the adults! (I had to google “instruments starting with A” to figure out that the guitar shown on the A page must represent an acoustic guitar!)

Evaluation: This book avoids the boring “same old same old” content of most alphabet books, and the pictures are a joy. The hand-drawn fonts are also entertaining and kid-friendly.

Rating: 4/5
