Sunday Treat: Paint-On-Glass Animation of Hemingway’s “The Old Man and The Sea”

This short film from 1999 won not only the Oscar in 2000 but eleven other awards from around the world. It is the most beautiful film visually that I have ever seen. The director, Aleksandr Petrov, and his son Dmitri, took over two years to paint over 29,000 frames of pastel oils on glass. If you don’t want to watch all twenty minutes, at least pick up from :38 to 1:07 on this youtube video of the first half to see some of the animal sequences.

Or watch the entire video on Open Culture, here.
