Please consider joining the childhood literacy initiative called the Birthday Party Pledge, which asks adults to commit to buying multicultural books as gifts for the children in their lives.
“It takes a village” to ensure that each child has a home library, yet finding books that feature children of color can be challenging. This new site provides annotated lists (picture books, historical fiction, graphic novels, books boys love, speculative fiction, poetry, global fiction, etc.) so that adults can go into a bookstore or library armed with titles that truly reflect the diversity of our world.
There is also a blog for activities and strategies that are sure to get your child excited about books!
You can also “like” the site on Facebook!
Please check out these wonderful new resources and share them with others.

This is a nice initiative! Well, I’m not sure it will work with my kids (my son is stuck on Stephen King and my daughter won’t read anything I give her just on principle). But I am proud of the fact that I have some culturally diverse books that are going on my auction for ALL this year.
What an excellent idea.
Nice idea! I almost always gift books anyway, I’ll have to look at some of these titles.
This is a great idea, and I have a few nieces and nephews that would benefit from an idea like this one. I am going to be joining, and checking out the list. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I love this! I take the pledge!!
I shall do my best — of course, it doesn’t help when your child wants books about Captain Underpants!
What a fantastic idea!
I try to do this. My little sister has very sheltered, suburban, all-white existence right now so I try to find books that will challenge her. I gave her my copy of Banana Yoshimoto’s Kitchen for Christmas this year.
As you know, I solidly support this project. It’s a brilliant idea.
Incredible idea – I will take it on…on MY birthday I will give Martin’s Big Words to my classroom AND my grandkiddos!! Thanks for sharing!
That website is a great resource! My boys (5 and 7 years old) have quite a few multi-cultural picture books but I never thought about gifting them to other children. Great idea – thanks for sharing this.
Great idea! Kids need to see all races positively from a very young age. I’ll have to check it out.
Thanks so much for reminding me of this. I must sign up myself
