The Shelf Discovery Challenge

Julie, the inimitable Booking Mama, is hosting the Shelf Discovery Challenge which sounds like a lot of fun.

This challenge is named for the book Shelf Discovery: The Teen Classics We Never Stopped Reading by Lizzie Skurnick, which features books and authors that defined the youth of so many bloggers – books like Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, The Good Earth, and Jacob Have I Loved.

Personally, I missed that aspect of childhood – I read mostly biographies, Nancy Drew books, and The Farmer’s Almanac. So I am interested in this challenge to become familiar with the books which played such a big role in so many people’s lives!

I haven’t selected my six books yet because I’m waiting for our periodic library sale in November. They usually have a nice array of dog-eared YA classics, and it will be fun to pick some out. If you want to join in this challenge, please stop over at Julie’s blog and sign up. She’ll be adding little incentives for those who join like periodic mini-challenges.

  3. I’m thinking about this one too. I want to find book (Shelf Discovery) first and see if there is anything in there that fits my teenage years. So far, in what I’ve read on blogs, the books all seems to fit my daughter’s time period.

  4. Ok, you’re officially the last straw. One too many people doing this to not join in. i’ll have to sit down and make my list, tonight. I love a lot of the books listed already. I’m psyched to go read through the book!

  5. Aww, this sounds so fun! I’m almost mad I saw your post though, haha… I’m addicted to reading challenges, regardless of whether or not I actually finish them, and it’s so hard for me to resist joining in! I loved Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret as a preteen… I think I read it when I was around 12? Maybe 13?

  6. I would love to do this one but I need another challenge like a hole in the head!! :) Have fun, I will enjoy reading your thoughts on them!!
